Darwin formulated his theory explaining evolution based
on three well-known facts: 1) all organisms produce more offspring
than can possibly survive; 2) all individuals in a species vary from
one another; and 3) at least some of this variation is inherited by
offspring. In this section we discuss how variability arises and how
traits are passed on to offspring.
